  1. New Paltz, United States

The bridge is part of the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail, a greenway of about twenty kilometers that was developed on an old railway line that ceased operation in 1997.

The scene : The Abbotts walk in single file across the old metal bridge when little Beau's toy spaceship starts to blink and beep: a scream erupts from the woods, and a creature takes the child away before Lee can reach him.

  2. 623 West Dover Road (Pawling)

    Pawling, United States

19th century farmhouse — the house dates back to 1880 according to the Pawling records — in the heart of an estate of approximately 170 hectares crossed by West Dover Road; the main house has nine bedrooms.

The scene : This is where the Abbotts live: the family has made the barn with its dirt floor their silent refuge, and it is in the house that Evelyn, alone, must give birth while a creature prowls around, while Lee sets off fireworks to draw it away.

  3. 224 Holiday Hills Lane (Pawling)

    Pawling, United States

The scene : Returning from fishing, Lee and Marcus walk past this dilapidated house, then come across its occupant in the woods, an old man (Leon Russom) prostrated near the body of his wife: his scream immediately attracts a creature, and Lee must flee carrying his son on his shoulder.

  4. Little Falls, United States

Shopping artery of Little Falls, lined with remarkably preserved 19th-century buildings.

The scene : At the opening of the film, the Abbott family traverses a small town completely emptied of its inhabitants: the production has given this street an unsettling air of abandonment.

  5. 556 East Main Street (Little Falls)

    Little Falls, United States

Commercial premises on East Main Street, occupied by the offices of a carpet installer.

The scene : This façade is that of the pharmacy that the Abbotts search silently at the beginning of the film; only the exterior was filmed here, the interior having been shot in a grocery store in Beacon.

  6. 348 Main Street (Beacon)

    Beacon, United States

Family grocery store on Main Street, Beacon Natural Market, in operation since 2005.

The scene : In the aisles of the abandoned store, Regan and little Beau communicate in sign language; Beau reaches for a toy space shuttle placed high up, and his sister barely catches it before it crashes loudly to the ground.

  7. Little Falls, United States

The scene : After their fishing trip, Lee and Marcus slip behind the water curtain of the waterfall; there, Lee lets out a long scream — the first intentional sound of the film — under the frightened gaze of his son, whom he immediately reassures.

  8. Pawling, United States

The scene : With the agreement of the municipality, a section of the park area has been left uncultivated to give the setting a more threatening appearance.

  9. Rosendale, United States

The scene : A commune crossed by the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail, which provided settings for filming without specifying which ones.

  10. Gardiner, United States

The scene : Another municipality of the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail mentioned among those that hosted the filming, with no specific location known.

  11. Mistover Farm

    Pawling, United States

Pawling Equestrian Estate, perched on a hill between West Dover Road and the Swamp River, overlooking the Harlem Valley.

The scene : The silo scene — Marcus plunges into the grain and Regan leaps to pull him out — was filmed in the arena of this equestrian estate, converted into a set, just like the flooded basement where Lee works, the root cellar adapted for the baby, and the underwater shots.
