  1. Brickpit (Sydney Olympic Park)

    Sydney Olympic Park, Australia

State Brickworks Quarry, a brickworks founded in 1911 by the government of New South Wales in Homebush. Nicknamed "Brickies," it attracted young dragster enthusiasts from Sydney during the 1960s and 1970s. After its closure, the site was to host the Olympic Stadium, but the discovery of a colony of endangered frogs, the Green and Golden Bell Frogs, changed the plans: their pond was preserved at the heart of the Olympic Park, and a suspended walkway, the Ring Walk, allows for observation from above.

The scene : At the back of this old clay quarry stood the sets of Bartertown: Aunty Entity's lair beneath the Thunderdome sign, the tent city, the camels, and the makeshift vehicles.

  2. Coober Pedy, Australia

Iconic rock formation of the Breakaways, north of Coober Pedy.

The scene : In front of this white and yellow rock formation, Bartertown gathers for Max's expulsion, sent on horseback to the Gulag by Aunty Entity's Wheel of Fortune.

  3. Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park

    Coober Pedy, Australia

Conservation park that protects the Breakaways, a set of colored hills and cliffs north of Coober Pedy.

The scene : In the hills of the Breakaways, Max is serving his sentence in the Gulag and catches a glimpse of Bartertown in the distance; Aunty's vehicles race down a steep slope and Jebediah's plane narrowly avoids flying over a cliff.

  4. Coober Pedy, Australia

The scene : On this lunar plateau near Coober Pedy, the film opens with the convoy of camels and the plane, and most of the car chases take place on rough terrain.

  5. Crocodile Harry's Underground Nest

    Coober Pedy, Australia

One of the most elaborate troglodyte dwellings in Coober Pedy, excavated by the eccentric "Crocodile Harry," now deceased, who charged for visits; it is located on Seventeen Mile Road, a few kilometers from the town.

The scene : Jedediah's troglodyte house, discovered at the end of the film: his room, his bed, and the tunnel through which Jedediah Jr. escapes were filmed there.

  6. Mermaids Cave (Blackheath)

    Blackheath, Australia

Sandstone cave of the Blue Mountains, near Blackheath, accessible by a short trail from the Megalong Valley road.

The scene : This rock shelter in the Megalong Valley becomes the "crevice in the earth" where the tribe of children lives: wooden steps and scaffolding, a pool and a waterfall, a cabin and Slaker's zipline.

  7. Cronulla Sand Dunes (Kurnell)

    Kurnell, Australia

Sand dunes of the Kurnell Peninsula, south of Sydney, whose desert-like appearance has served as a backdrop for several Australian films, including Forty Thousand Horsemen (1940) and The Rats of Tobruk (1944).

The scene : In the dunes of the Kurnell Peninsula lies the wreck of Captain Walker's 747, the founding myth of the Lost Boys tribe.

  8. North Head (Sydney)

    Manly, Australia

Promontory that closes off the northern entrance to Sydney Harbour.

The scene : The ruined model of Sydney, featuring the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, was filmed from this promontory facing the harbor for the final aerial shot of the city.

  9. Glebe (Sydney)

    Glebe, Australia

The scene : It is in an abandoned bull auction ring in Glebe that Underworld, the underground pigsty of Bartertown, was filmed.
