  1. Film City (Råsunda)

    Solna, Sweden

Studio complex of the Svensk Filmindustri company, located in Råsunda, in the municipality of Solna.

The scene : In the workshops of Svensk Filmindustri, the decorator P.A. Lundgren builds a complete church, including vaults, ceiling, murals, and real flooring: it is in this setting that Pastor Tomas Ericsson celebrates the long opening mass in front of a handful of faithful, under the altarpiece loaned by the parish of Lillkyrka. The interiors, initially shot in the church of Skattungbyn, are recreated here over the course of three studio sequences between October 1961 and January 1962.

  2. Skattunge Church

    Orsa, Sweden

Church completed in 1839 in Skattungbyn, in the municipality of Orsa, on the site of an ancient wooden chapel.

The scene : The church of Skattungbyn becomes the second church of the film, that of Frostnäs, where Tomas arrives at the end of the day and decides to celebrate the service nonetheless, in front of just four people. The crew shoots both outside and inside, but the light of its interior, considered too beautiful, leads to these shots being redone in the studio.

  3. Borlänge, Sweden

The Church of Torsång, located in Dalarna, forms a protected architectural ensemble along with its surroundings as part of ecclesiastical monuments.

The scene : Shots are filmed in front of the church in Torsång, the same one that serves as a model for the church reconstructed in the studio for the opening mass.

  4. Falun, Sweden

The scene : This water reservoir in Dalarna features among the outdoor locations of the film, shot between November 8 and December 1, 1961, in gray weather or mist.

  5. Rättvik, Sweden

The scene : This hamlet in the municipality of Rättvik is among the outdoor locations used in the film, filmed only during overcast weather or in mist, during the short days of November 1961.

  6. Rättvik, Sweden

The scene : Another village near Rättvik where the crew sets up their camera during the exterior weeks in late 1961.

  7. Rättvik, Sweden

The scene : Rättvik is among the filming locations in Dalarna and serves as the base for the crew during the outdoor scenes in November 1961.

  8. Orsa, Sweden

The scene : Bergman also films in the Orsa Finnmark area, north of the municipality, during the short days of November, and expresses his fulfillment with its low and oblique light.
