Baghdad Cemetery (Leander)
Leander, United States
Cemetery founded in 1857, when Charles Babcock ceded an acre of land to bury his three-year-old son. Colonel Charles C. Mason, the first postmaster of Baghdad, was buried there eight years later; his monument is among the tallest in the enclosure. Still in operation, the cemetery has received more than 3,500 burials.
The scene : The film opens here with a horrifying vision: desecrated corpses staged on a tombstone. A little later, the van arrives at the cemetery and Sally and Franklin come to ensure that their grandfather's grave is intact.
1073 State Highway 304 (Bastrop)
Bastrop, United States
Former grocery and service station of Hills Prairie, renamed Bilbo's Texas Landmark, then The Gas Station in 2016 after its purchase and restoration. The place, now operated under the name We Slaughter Barbecue, combines a barbecue restaurant, a gift shop, and cabins for rent at the back.
The scene : After getting rid of the unsettling hitchhiker, the five friends, low on gas, stop at this gas station where a barbecue is grilling on the fire; the unfriendly manager warns them and urges them to move along.
1010 King Court (Kingsland)
Kingsland, United States
House built in 1909 for the Thompson family based on plans by architect George Franklin Barber: ceilings of nearly 3.7 m, intricate moldings, a curved entrance hall around the staircase. Purchased in 1998 by Dennis and Barbara Thomas, it was cut into seven pieces, transported over a hundred kilometers from Round Rock to the Antlers Inn estate in Kingsland, then reassembled and restored by carpenter Anthony Mayfield. It has successively housed the Kingsland Old Town Grill, the Four Bears, the Grand Central Cafe, and today, the restaurant Hooper's.
The scene : The Leatherface family's farmhouse is the central setting for the last two acts: one of the young women approaches its white facade, and it is inside that the room strewn with feathers and bones is located. At the time of filming, the house still stood in Round Rock.
Quick Hill (Round Rock)
Round Rock, United States
Round Rock Hill is named after William Quick, a former owner of the land. The old County Road 172 crossed it; duplicated in the early 1990s by a new route to the west, it was then closed to the public and bisected by the construction of Texas State Highway 45 starting in 2002. The Camden La Frontera apartments have occupied the north foot of the hill since 2013, and visitors report that it has largely been leveled for new housing. The farm was dismantled in the late 1990s to make way for the La Frontera subdivision.
The scene : The killers' farm stood on this hill during filming. It is also on the old county road that crossed it where the finale was shot: Sally runs away while Leatherface performs his famous dance, chainsaw raised.
Round Rock, United States
A lot occupied since at least 2004 by the Texas Tires Round Rock garage, in an area that has been deeply urbanized since the 1970s.
The scene : During a stop of the van by the roadside, Franklin runs down the slope below; the shot was filmed on the eastern part of the current site of the Texas Tires garage.
Neuhoff Bros. Feedlot (Hillsboro)
Hillsboro, United States
Former fattening yard of Neuhoff Bros., a meat packaging company founded in 1932 and acquired in 1976 by Mickelberry's Meat Products. The holding corral and the feeders are still in place.
The scene : The shots of the slaughterhouse and its cattle pens were filmed in this former feeding park, some 200 km from the other locations of the film.
Hutto, United States
The scene : On this country road, the van stops to pick up a hitchhiker, unaware of what awaits him.
Hutto, United States
Former two-lane road widened in 2017 into four separate lanes; the field that bordered it has given way to a concrete or limestone operation.
The scene : About 1.8 km further south, the group expels the hitchhiker from the van by the side of the road.
Hester's Crossing Road & County Road 172 (Round Rock)
Round Rock, United States
House largely made of limestone built at the end of the 19th century by William S. Thompson, then purchased in 1909 by William Quick. Vacant, it burned down in the late 1970s; its ruins disappeared under the route of the Texas State Highway 45, constructed from 2002.
The scene : The old grandparents' house, where Sally speaks of her fascination with zebras in a room adorned with wallpaper resembling their fur. The film makes it seem distant from that of the killers, whereas it was almost directly opposite.
San Marcos, United States
The scene : IMDb links the shots of the semi-trailer to San Marcos.
